Why do the career tributes so easily accept Peeta into their group? It seems like they would be suspicious of his motives. Maybe they're just so confident that they could kill him if things went wrong for them?
I think that the careers have accepted Peeta into their group so easily because they think if he's with them he'll lead them to Katniss, since they're known in the arena as "star-crossed lovers". They probably believe that he's not powerful enough to kill any of them, so the careers aren't worried about their safety. I'm sure they figure they can kill both Katniss and Peeta by stringing Peeta along. I'm guessing that they think that he's really weak and is only trying to be with the careers because they seem like a strong group so he'll have more protection.
I agree that the Careers might have considered Peeta to be weak enough for them to kill off later, but I think the reason that they might have disregarded any suspicions is because they, in contrast to Katniss, were thoroughly convinced that he was in love. They might have thought that he knew that one of the two would have to go, and most likely the other as well, and that he valued his own skin over a life-long infatuation. Judging by the conversation they had while Peeta was checking that the girl who started the fire was dead, the Careers were under the impression that "Lover Boy" could lead them to their target.
I think they were using him to get to Katniss and thought that once he led them to Katniss that he would just be an easy kill. Maybe they thought he was gullable enought to do that.

ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree with Musical Mal. It kinda says that in the book. If they figure out he saved her life, they will probably kill him.
